Thoughts About Those Living With Mesothelioma

strength faith survivorSomeone suggested that I write about Mesothelioma, a type of cancer thought to be caused by asbestos.  I thought it would be wise to study the topic first, before writing about it.

I discovered that Mesothelioma is a fast spreading form of cancer usually caused by abestos fibers being inhaled, and then becoming embedded into a person’s lungs, abdomen or heart.  The resulting inflammation causes tumors, producing an aggressive form of cancer that creates a disease causing people to have an average life expectancy of 12 to 21 months.  It is good to report that the prognosis is improving for patients with mesothelioma.

People do not know they have this form of cancer because of it’s long latency period, so that symptoms do not show up for long periods of time.   Malignant mesothelioma would have spread before a person has a diagnosis of mesothelioma.

mesotheliomaPeople may never know they have this disease until they go to a doctor complaining of shortness of breath and chronic coughing.  It is then that their doctor may have an image scan of some form done to help in making a diagnosis of mesothelioma.  Mesothelioma treatment may involve combinations of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or experimental medicine through clinical trials, according to mesothelioma.net.

It is debilitating to find out that someone you love, or yourself, has learned of what could be a serious diagnosis of one’s health, one that appears to indicate a dim future of life and one that is possibly life-threatening.  I have never met anyone who was anxious to face death.  We all have to face death of our bodies at some point in our lives, and facing the prospect of death or of a serious, debilitating illness can be a frightening reality.

Having cancer, or “the C word” as it used to be called, can be a frightening diagnosis.  It feels like the end of the world, a huge obstacle to whether a person lives or dies.  Things were a lot more serious then when it was thought that cancer kills and there is no hope of survival.

We know that that’s not true today, with many finding alternate or medical cures, to help them fight their battles and treatments of cancer which change over time, giving people hope of survival and beating this terrible disease for good.

Alternative medicine

Natural healing advocates may talk about healing cancers by stopping eating sugar along with getting more oxygen into the body’s cells.  As a researcher who is interested in healing the body and mind for myself, I find these alternative treatments to be interesting.

Doctor’s medical training often does not cover alternative healing methods, so patients get only their form of healing.  I do not argue the medical treatments by medical doctor’s today; I do not have enough education, and no medical training to take that on.  I’m sure there are fine, caring doctor’s out there who really want to find cures for aggressive cancers such as mesothelioma but they are limited to the cancer research and their medical training, and what insurance allows them to do as far as treatment.

I think it wise that a patient of mesothelioma learn about their form of cancer, and also research the alternative treatments found around the world in order to choose what they want to be treated with, how and what the research shows.

Today’s psychology

familycomfortThere are many ways that psychology today can help alleviate the distress caused by having a serious illness to contend with.  We can find help and support through counseling, or through caring friends and family.  When we are suffering it is vital that we don’t go through our fears alone and that we find hope, happiness and fulfillment while we fight whatever physical battles we face.

For the ultimate hope, many people look to spiritual guidance and a faith in something greater than themselves for times when they are faced with overwhelming challenges.  Studies have shown that having a faith in something greater than oneself can help people calm their anxiety.  Prayer has helped people, praying to a higher diety, or to the unknown.  It all seems to help with the anxiety and depression people feel when they are someone they care about has become very ill.  The warmth found in a mother’s arms, such as for a small child, calms the person and lets the strength and caring of another person carry them, until they find strength to move on.  Love, care and compassion work wonders to help a person move forward in dealing with disease.

Prayers being prayed by people for those who are ill also may help, according to reports of studies being performed about prayer.  The relaxation involked by prayer or medidation calms the body so that the body can heal, according to a Harvard scientist.

My Christian viewpoint

As I Christian, I have a particular perspective about illness and health where I rely upon the bible for information.  If I were ill, I would look to Christ and the bible for comfort and guidance.  I am also a cessationist, a Christian who believes that the miraculous “gifts” given to the Apostles to start the early church were given, so that they could preach God’s message and be validated by the miracles they performed.  I do not believe people today have miraculous, healing gifts, and I cringe when I watch supposed “miracle healers” online.

Christ-comforterFeeling a loss of control over their bodies and minds, even, places great anxiety, fear and depression on some, but for those who are sure of Christ, they can be even comforted, once the initial shock over their sudden and great distress is realized.

The bible is full of teaching about healing.  A verse that comes to mind, Proverbs 4:20-22 says;

My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words.  Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.

This verse in and of itself should cause hope to someone suffering from a debilitating disease.  I realize that not everyone is a Christian but saying something encouraging to someone who is sick can help.

A broad span of issues can cause disease, from having evil in one’s life, known as “sin” in the Christian world, or biological issues.  Let me be clear, there is enough sin going around in people today that sin is not limited nor is necessarily the reason, that someone becomes sick.  Please don’t feel that you or someone you love has become seriously ill because of their sin; we are all sinners, and someone’s illness can be spread by someone else or caused by the food we ingest or other environmental factors that can poison systems of the body.  Many things can cause illness in the body, including mental illness, in my belief.

I’m not a doctor, but writing about cancer, and cancer that is thought to be caused by abestos, called “Mesothelioma”, causes me to explain this.  I want to head off some of the false beliefs, and false doctrines, that people who are suffering from serious diseases can fall victim to, and save some time from going down that road.  However, there are things that people can do to help them heal in the world today, which may be options, or compatible treatments to the biomedical world of treatment today.

Heretics and healing

Many people find false healers, putting their hopes in these heretical actors, find they are let down when they are not healed or ignored in some back room.  They are kept out of sight of a large congregation where people are fooled, giving money and praise to these disasterous meetings.  In one of my blog posts I delve more into false teaching.

Also to be considered by any Christian so that they are not fooled, is the knowledge that satan, and his demonic dominion, may also have healing, supernatural powers.  People practicing sorcery may use magic which draws upon the occult of demonic warfare.  Stories of magicians using sorcery can be found in the bible, such as Simon, and Bar-Jesus.

2 Thessalonians reads;

Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

And in Revelation 13:11-14, we read;

11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

Demons actually were angels thrown out of heaven and now dominate the earth, forming weapons against people considering believing in Christ Jesus.  They attack primarily the mind and can confuse a person to be angry at the Lord Jesus Christ, not understanding what Christ did for us.  A person can be helped by the spiritual world, be it bad spirit powers, or being of God’s power.

Preachers such as Benny Hinn who has been seen as the heretic that he is, with scenes in the background described by people who attended those meetings, where sick people await to be healed are kept waiting in the back room never to go on stage.  Those people are never healed and are left with a crushing realization that miracle healer Benny Hinn is not going to heal them.  I would propose that many of the word of faith preachers out there have been sufficiently exposed by YouTuber’s, bloggers and others who have been victimized by the same false preachers, and share how they know that this is false teaching of the bible.

If you are familiar with the teaching of Justin Peters who teaches about word of faith and other false teachings and how they exploit people, you might hear him share about how he wanted to be healed of Cerebral Palsy and attended Benny Hinn’s miraculous healing meetings as well as those of Ken Copeland and Jesse Duplantis.  Justin Peters did say that he believes now that his full healing will happen when he is given his glorified body, that it will not take place “on this side of heaven”.  I tend to believe this.  Jesus used signs to prove he was the son of God, and even when he performed many miracles, people still did not believe him.

It is heartbreaking when people want God to heal them so desperately, and they usually are not healed miraculously and immediately, like how the Apostles healed in the early church.  Many know that after studying the teachings of Justin Peters and John MacArthur, for example, that heretics are interested only in money, living lavish lifestyles that Jesus did not teach Christians to do.  It is not the message of the bible, nor is the message of the bible about false healing.

The message of the bible is about how Christ died on the cross for our sins, was raised up after the third day, and pain the price for man’s sinful natures.  He is alive and interceding on our behalves, seated at the right hand of the Father.  If you are a Christian, you should know this is the message of the bible.  We are forgiven and saved from an eternity of punishment.

I must say here that Christ can perform miracles any time he wants to.  As a cessationist I do not have a belief that Christ is no longer able to perform miracles.  He is the Son of God, and he can certainly heal people if he wishes.  We do not limit the capacity of God, which is very misunderstood and misreported by many who cast stones at the Bereans who study and learn from the bible, as opposed to believing and practicing whatever is preached these days.

Summary

love researchBefore one falls into a black void with the prospect of possibly not surviving mesothelioma, they should get busy researching what is out there that may be of help to their health.  We all could be faced with serious, debilitating illnesses and possibly some of you already have, but before one falls into fear thinking they could never survive the news of their facing a serious medical illness such as mesothelioma, a few things should be done.  Seeking comfort of friends and family and becoming open to the available information that is out there that could help support the healing process are the things I would do in the face of this terrible disease called mesothelioma.  I would not give up seeking what could be done to treat my illness and become healthy, no matter what the prospects are said to be concerning my survival rate.

Another thing I would do is find comfort in practicing my form of faith.  For you it might be meditation or seeking some form of religious practice that can help calm your fears and anxiety, depression and all other emotional reactions and responses to having a diagnosis of mesothelioma.

There is pain and fear in knowing that someone you love is suffering from some disease that they feel no control over, adding to the confusion of questioning why this has happened to them, but the way through these things may be an opportunity to look to Jesus, who is full of compassion, love and comfort.

Even while people survive mesothelioma to live long lives, it is still good to know that  there is a loving God in Jesus Christ who can heal, comfort and provide compassion at any stage or situation in life.  Many have found Christ, but others have learned the wrong things in the bible, so have sadly rejected Christ.  But in Christ there is hope of living a better life after we die, which we all most probably will have to face, and reach a place of knowing He is waiting patiently for us with open arms.

The knowledge that Christ awaits the children of God to join him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus can bring joy to someone suffering, and the Holy Spirit joins with Christ’s joy in bringing God’s children home.  We are not alone.
