John MacArthur’s Notes From His Study Bible I Would Recommend Reading: Speaking In Tongues And Sign Gifts Have Ceased

wp-image-2094332492Today I’ve read from John MacArthur’s study bible where he has notes on speaking in tongues and also sign gifts from 1 Corinthians, and how these sign gifts have ceased.  It is what makes one a cessationist, knowing that the signs used back in the books of Acts have ceased, not to be confused by thinking that cessationists believe that the Lord Jesus or any facet of the Trinity can no longer perform miracles.

That is wrong thinking and the wrong teaching about cessationists, and an unfair portrayal of what they (including myself) believes.

Hear me read John MacArthur’s notes from his study bible on these issues.  They are a good handful of his notes, but they are not all of the notes he writes on these issues by any means.  They should give you a good understanding of where he comes from in saying that the sign gifts including tongues have ceased in this modern day.

Please listen and have yourself a field day proving to your friends that they are wrong and blaspheming the Holy Spirit in saying he is speaking in gibberish.

Tongues And The Azuza Street Revival: A Pagan Religious Ecstatic Practice

Tongues has been the scourge of Christianity in America for years.  It is the gibbering vowels and nonsense spoken by the Continuationist Charismatic movement that has morphed into many “waves” and variations from that time on.

The Azuza Street Revival was the beginning of Pentecostalism in America.  It began in Los Angeles, California, on April 9, 1906, as a meeting that continued until 1915 which grew into a revival.

Today, the revival is considered by historians to be the primary catalyst for the spread of Pentecostalism in the 20th century. ~ Wikipedia, Azusa Street Revival

Pentecostalism, founded by William J. Seymour, combines a pagan religion based on African Voodoo shamanic “tongues” and church of god evening light saints holiness churches.

William J. Seymour had early life experiences with spirits and parallel manifestations, like unto his forefathers who practiced pagan Voodoo religion. ~ Curtis Edwards: Pagan Pentecostalism – It’s Roots: Sex, Sin & Slavery

Many of these people know the bible, they have read it and learned the basic messages of God written in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.  But their understanding of the gift of “tongues” is basically wrong, and so wrong that I fear that a new religion of satan is being born, ushered in by those who believe that speaking gibberish tongues is a gift from the Lord Jesus Christ; but it is not.  It is of satan.  Like John MacArthur says, if you are in an ecstatic state speaking in these “tongues”, and not making sense, you are either in the flesh in a type of trance-like state or you are under the guise of a “foreign spirit”, thinking it is of God.  They think it is God’s Holy Spirit making people speak in unknown gibberish, but the Holy Spirit being God, is not a God of confusion.

Pagan History

Pagan ecstatic “tongues” is very common in pagan religion and so is counterfeit.  I offer something I would start with, to review the speaking in languages that were signs to authenticate the validity of the new age.  John MacArthur is a great teacher on this and other subjects:

“Corinth Revisited”:  Speaking In Tongues – by John MacArthur

The problem with the tongues speaking people is that they have veered off into seeking the miraculous where all their time is spent on chasing miracles instead of preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Their sole focus seems to be on their “miraculous gift”; speaking gibberish.  As someone wrote,

What is at the heart of the Pentecostal, Charismatic and Neo-Charismatic movements? The answer is a peculiar doctrine of the Holy Spirit. ~ Rev. Angus Stewart: The Three Waves of Charismatic Christianity

Book of Acts – Early Church

In the book of Acts, there was a gift of known languages given to the people who were speaking, with the Holy Spirit’s leading, to the travelers who had come from distant cities and countries.  They recognized the work of God because the people speaking their languages could not have ever learned their language, but were miraculously speaking a language that someone could understand.  It was a miraculous gift of God at the time and conveyed the message of God to the people who traveled long distances.  It helped to start the early church.

By speaking in the known languages, the words of God were easily spread to more people and translators who were present could translate the foreign language into the known language of the locals so that they, too, would know what was being said.

So if someone is speaking at the United Nations in Chinese, not everyone knows the Chinese language so interpreters are present who can translate Chinese into every countries language, so that all understand.

After the Book of Acts where the early church got started, people didn’t practice speaking in foreign languages any more.  The word had spread, enough that Christianity was being recognized.  It was never talked about after that point in time in the bible, so that those early Apostolic gifts were not being used in the manner in which the Apostles used them.  There were a few times in the bible which spoke about others “casting out a demon”, but that died out too.  It was not present in the bible but people today keep carrying on as if they have those Apostolic and miraculous gifts, but who use them to keep control on their congregants who give money to be healed, spoken over and other tyrannizing ways that takes advantage of their naivete of the bible.

Other Studied Pastors “Take” On Tongues, As Miraculous Sign Gifts

How many people who speak in tongues also claim they have other “miraculous gifts”?  They do not have the bible knowledge to know the difference.  I will now include the so-called “healing gifts” where these people speak in tongues, and may have other “gifts”.  I want to show you something important about these so-called “gifts”, by very knowledgeable pastors and teachers on the subject about these false teachers.

Take Benny Hinn, for example.  He is a fox in sheep’s clothing and I think I can say with great confidence that many of you who read this are agreeing; he is a false preacher who takes advantage of poor, sick people, and has grown an empire of wealth upon these people’s backs.

The healers also have their “take” on speaking in tongues as being a miraculous gift going on today.  A great teacher about this, Justin Peters, has a video where he talks about false teachers.  Having Cerebral Palsy, he attended Benny Hinn healing meetings, seeking to be healed.  Here is an excellent example of his teaching against false teaching:

Justin Peters:   (236) Justin Peters: The Hurt of Healing

Read what Justin Peters has to say about his experience with Word of Faith preachers:

I wanted to be healed of my CP and did not see it for what it was – something which, in His sovereignty, God gave me.  I was seeking supposed gifts and not the Giver. … When I would go to the Benny Hinn, Ken Copeland, Duplantis, etc., etc. meetings I grieved – I genuinely grieved.  However, in hindsight, I now see that my grieving was misplaced.  I grieved primarily because I saw the poor and the desperate and the sick being abused and exploited.  …  However, my grieving should have been first and foremost that God’s Name and His Word were being maligned and twisted.  I should have been broken over God’s reputation far more so than the people themselves. ~ Justin Peters:  Personal Testimony

And Costi Hinn, having been interviewed about his uncle Benny Hinn’s healing meetings, speaks clearly in a video interview, about his uncle’s Word of Faith healings as being false:  Costi Hinn (Nephew of Benny Hinn) Gives Encouraging Testimony

We are no longer living in those times where we must start the early Christian church.  We are well beyond that time, and we have bibles written in foreign languages where it is delivered to people around the world, so that they can understand the bible in their native languages.  That is why the gift of known languages was needed during the time of Acts; people did not have book publishers and the internet to translate the language that the bible was being taught in.  Not everyone spoke the same language then, or now.

Not Prayer

These “continuationists” or “charismatics” seem to think that God’s plans for us are going to be interfered with if satan has a clue about what we are praying.  Here is another problem with Faith Healers who “speak in tongues”; they say they have to give God permission to heal someone.  They call upon the Lord, giving him directions to “give them more power” so that human beings can, in their faith, lay their hands on someone to heal them.  This goes into another whole ball of wax where the charismatics seem to have no boundaries on the supernatural powers they think that God has gifted them with.  I can’t give you all the facts here, I do not have the blog space for today to write about all this and how it gels with the “tongues” speaking pagan-worshiping we see today.

Speaking in gibberish is supposedly a “secret, prayer language” that was once described to me as having to be unknown so that “satan would not know what you are praying to the Lord”.  The problem I have with that is, God is over and above satan who was Lucifer, the most special angel that GOD CREATED, who wanted to be God.  He was thrown out of heaven and took one-third of the angels with him.

Would I have to say something to God in secret?  Is God not strong enough to get satan out of the way if He wants to?  Did God not create Lucifer?  Did Jesus not overcome death?  Where in the bible does it instruct Christians to pray in secret to prevent satan from tearing apart what we ask of God?  God asks us to pray in our closet in secret so that we are not like the hypocrites that pray openly out on the street corners to be seen by men, but He asks us that we pray in secret so that He will reward us openly.

Folks, there is more to write about these subjects, much more, and there are many testimonies about how these false teachings have harmed people growing up in these churches.  I believe these false teachings, being not of God, however misunderstood, are promulgated within churches like a growing fad, keeping people excited to see the “moves of God” happening within their churches.

However these embarrassing manifestations are growing in popularity and cause fear and grave concern among the more studied pastors who are serious and level headed in what they teach from the bible.  These manifestations can be a door opening to satan and leading people to become affected by satan, becoming under the spell and control of satanic ritualistic nonsense, scaring people away, and causing people to be under the domination of the demonic.

A Fake Jesus Shows Himself To Be Psychotic In Nature: What Blasphemy!

ghost-156969_1280I’m a little worried about all the people I know who are misled into thinking that Jesus appears as a “cloud of smoke”, or that Jesus’ joy consists of “laughing for hours” because his joy is so strong and other “manifestations” that people report about being special to God, being of God and having that “anointing” that is so strong and powerful that they become spokesmen for a certain church or belief.

And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. (Luke 16:31)

I wonder at how long the Lord will contain Himself, watching these ministers who spout miraculous healings, or Words of God that they receive, speaking in tongues all over the place, even teaching their flocks to “speak in tongues”?  My grief is that so many people will follow these preachers, not reading their bibles, and walking with Christ, but walking after these “signs and wonders preachers”, instead?

Won’t people be grieved to find they are not “known by God”, they have been too naive and trusting, to be led by preachers that have to have “signs and wonders” at their churches in order to prove that the Lord Jesus Christ is there?  Who do we follow, man or God?

My experiences in various false Divinity Schools has shown me that these “signs and wonders” teachers turn into leaders into the “miraculous”, that they are not followers of Christ, but of man.  Every “miracle” is not necessarily of God.  We are going down a slippery slope to believe that every “impartation, vision or sign” is automatically that of God.  Satan is a deceiver, who will lead people away from believing on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Who needs signs and wonders to believe?  Why is it that they must preach in signs and wonders in order to prove faith?

Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. (John 4:48)

Who today supplants their faith with the need to see, or experience, signs and wonders? Faith is believing, sight unseen.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)

I recall someone saying, the Jews needed signs and the Greeks needed logic.  How about blind faith?  You hear the word of God, and you believe?

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.  (Romans 10:17)

People are too young in the Lord to really believe Him, without resorting to “proofs”.  Keep with your faith, do not be side-tracked into thinking that Jesus will perform special magic tricks to prove you believe.

We cannot be turned from the truth about God, we must hold true to the bible and our faith.  God doesn’t need to show Himself in weird phenomena, He gave us his Word and that is enough.  We cannot let false teaching invade the church.  I offer a link to a message about seducing spirits by  John MacArthur.

The problem is, these false preachers lead people away from Jesus, to follow them.  They amass quite a following.

I must say it is a mental phenomena, to me, that so many would want a following so badly that they would look for signs and wonders to invade their churches, just so they can excite or impress people, grow their “flock” and maybe become famous.

Look how many preachers seem to enjoy getting that special Word from God, thinking they are more special than others, so that they get that special message from God, and decree that you will have this or that.  I am tired of the showmanship where it is no longer about God, but about them.  These men and women of God who practice “little god” doctrines, who want all eyes to be on them, but not on the Lord Jesus Christ.  They play at being a “god”, because they want all the adulation, are self-seeking, ego-seeking and not of God.

I ask, who played at being a god, but was thrown out of heaven?

For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders that would deceive even the elect, if that were possible.  (Matthew 24:24)

I’m watching a disturbing video about how people are led to believe that Jesus is, and what he does with people.  It is very disturbing, talking about the Jesus Culture, in this particular video.  People shake, laugh for hours, see smoke in the air, and they call this a manifestation of Jesus.  They are looking for “an experience with God”, and sadly they are being misled.  They are not discerning the true Spirit of God.

Part 2: Jesus Culture – a Call for Discernment, Are you sure it’s your Jesus?

I was once part of this popular culture of spirits, of demons, really, which are the seducing spirits God talks about.  Spirits that led me to believe that I was being “slain in the spirit” for some strange reason.  Talking in tongues of gibberish, meaning nothing, not knowing I did not have to “hide” my prayers in “my prayer language”, so that Satan wold not understand what I was saying.  My prayers are heard and understood by God.  I do not need a special “prayer language” so that God knows secretly, what I am praying, so maybe this will protect my prayers from being understood by Satan.  Is Satan a threat to the Lord Jesus Christ?

All I can say is, wow.  I didn’t know we had such an unmighty, unvictorious Savior, like Christ who was raised from the dead, came back to walk the earth, and then ascend up into Heaven where he sits at the right hand of the Father.  Do I need to hide my prayers for God to be safe enough to understand them so that Satan will not hear?  When did Jesus overcome Satan, then?  Was it not the truth that Jesus has already been victorious over death, and that after a time, Satan will be no more on earth?

But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” (Revelation 20:9b-10)

Looking back, I see with great sadness how people want “the experience”, and, like a drug seeker who wants that “high”, and an altered state of experience, they are still seeking the seducer who calls them back, to relive that “special encounter” they are having with (a) god.  It is not Jesus.  It has become the broad highway, going in the opposite direction of the straight and narrow path that few will follow.  Who are you following?

I have more to say about my studying, and becoming an “ordained minister” in a few of these places, which I do not aspire to use ever in my life.  I reject the counter-culture I see in various churches I have attended, schools I have graduated from as well as churches I have attended.  I reject this “touchy-feely”, “unity spiritual” and “encounter groups” I have been a witness to, unfortunately.  I have seen the truth through the eyes of Christ by reading my bible every day, and leaning on Him to teach me through the Holy Spirit’s opening my eyes while I read and study His Word.  I am hoping you do, too.

Speaking In My Native Tongue: My Tongue Is American English

dove of peace

I’m reading about spiritualism from Africa, and I realize some of the things I learned while earning my doctorate degree in Psychology, shamanism, in particular, were of voodoo roots.  Then I became a Christian, and holy hell broke loose.  I learned something new; I am not a tongues-speaker, and I never will be.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. – John 14:26

This is scary to me considering how much money I spent earning my Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, to starting my Ph.D. coursework, only to find God, then to find out that all of the teaching on Psychology was of worldly teaching, without God and would not heal people. Needless to say, I have maxed out my student loans and owe about $225,000 in student loans. I will not ever pay it back, no way. It’s above my pay level. I am looking for a job.

From what I am reading, several spiritual experiences of shamanism came from Africa, by a guy named Seymour, and I know the backlash I’m going to get from my friends who speak in tongues, and tell me I am of the devil, because I don’t believe them. I am not of the devil, and don’t speak in tongues. But that is not the reason for my blog post just yet. I am wanting to clear up a misconception, or a misunderstanding, of the devil in the kinds of spiritual worship that is out there calling itself Christian. I want to be counted as one that does not speak in tongues and is teachable, so that I can be friends with people who speak in tongues who I believe are sincere in their faith, but have just misread portions of the bible and who do not understand the founding father of their religious denomination.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. – Ephesians 6:12

It is William J. Seymour who founded the present day Pentecostalism, and I’m sure I have made several people angry, because I only have four readers at this point, and I humorously say that because it’s the truth. But all of you, except maybe for one, will not agree with me, here. I still think it’s funny because I know what kind of impact I will have on people, and that is none. None of my readers will care or they will tell me I am of the devil which I know I can handle because I’ve already been told I’m of the devil, or something along those lines by someone on Facebook who I care very much about and love like a sister, if that be possible.

Back to my story; I worked toward a Ph.D. and taught college, at the University of Phoenix, which I enjoyed very much. We were not allowed to let students out of class early but I wanted to keep teaching but I had to leave California at the time in kind of a hurry because I lost my house. I then had nowhere to live so I left the state of California. This was many years ago, around the time I finished my Master’s degree, in 1999.

I have more to say, I’m only getting started. My life is a cornucopia of trying to be good, tell the truth, follow the 12-step programs of which I was a member, (ACA, Al-Anon, debtors anonymous, and OA), and be “spiritual”, believing in a Higher Power Greater Than Myself. That’s all I knew about God, and the Lord’s Prayer.

Now, years later I can relate to the speaking in tongues people talk about and speak in. I went to church in Vacaville, California, where they spoke in tongues years ago, a rather large church where speaking in tongues was the norm. There was also an interpreter most of the time who would speak out in the congregation but I couldn’t hear him from where I sat so could not understand what he said. I think he spoke in English, my native tongue. It was not always the case though, when someone spoke in unintelligible tongues, that someone else acted as an interpreter. I guess God did not want people to understand what was said, in the gibber-tongues that had been spoken.

I am saying I am warning you; it is not fun to be under the control of one or more spirits, being slain in the spirit, speaking in tongues, or hearing spiritual voices. I have had more things happen to me than anyone I know, and I know that it was God that was treating me this way; NOT! No, He wouldn’t do that. I have since found God, through His Son, Jesus Christ, who has treated me with respect and guidance, never wearing me down, only finding me slain in spirit and helping me up.

He is a gracious God, willing to help anyone who reaches out for help to Him.
