Daniel’s Seventy Weeks Explained (audio)

As I was reading Daniel chapter 9 today I was confused by the last part that describes the seventy weeks.

Verse 25 says;

Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

I read in this that there would be first the seven years of the tribulation (Jacob’s trouble), then there would be sixty-two more weeks it should be built again. I was thinking that the seven years came at the end of the seventy weeks.

Reading the English standard translation of the bible verse 25 says this:

Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time.

The word “then” indicates that the sixty-two weeks comes after the seven weeks. So I had to sort out the timeline, otherwise I was understanding the timeline backwards.

I read this from one website;

Gabriel mentions “seventy sevens” will take place before God will put an end to sin and bring everlasting righteousness (Daniel 9:24).

Reading about Daniel’s Seventy Weeks was challenging although I have heard this information from several pastors over time. I never really understood it.

Daniel’s Seventy Weeks spans 490 prophetic “weeks” or years that cover the history of Israel found in Daniel 9:24-27.

Seven weeks multiplied times seven equals forty-nine years which it took to rebuild Jerusalem after the Babylonians had destroyed it.

Looking further I find that sixty-two times seven (434 years) is “the time designated for waiting for the Anointed One to come” (Daniel 9:26). After the 434 years, Jesus was put to death on the cross.

Sixty-nine weeks (483 years) has been fulfilled already.

According to the calculations I have read, there is one week left out of Daniel’s Seventy Weeks which indicates the seven years that start the seven-year tribulation. The last three-and-one-half years will be the worst years of that seven-years.

So two sites I have read explains that “Daniel’s Seventy Weeks” is the seven weeks (49 years) to rebuild Jerusalem, then sixty-nine weeks (483 years) that has already passed, plus one week that hasn’t yet happened, which will be the seven-year tribulation.

It is believed by many including myself that Christians will be raised up by Jesus “into the air” so that we won’t be on the earth during these seven years of the tribulation:

Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. – 1 Thessalonians 4:17
